tom pointed out a few years ago that when the crickets fill the air, the lightning bugs have gone. i've watched carefully and there is sometimes a short overlap, but for the most part, he's right. i do love the crickets. they are a constant song. i wake up to them and i fall asleep to them. they are tireless. and this morning the cicadas have joined in. there are the sounds of steps as early walkers pass the windows. the sun is making all the harsh shadows i love in morning. the spiderwebs are intricate and filmy. and although our cottage time this year was spectacular, i'm happy to be home.

  1. I take most of my photos in the morning and when I was doing a lot of painting, most of my paintings were probably of scenes within a couple hours of sunrise. It is just a nice time to be out.

  4. To quote Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz who clicked her ruby red slippers and said "there is no place like home." Welcome back, its fun to visit but always good to come home. :)

  6. WE have a critter here called a mole cricket (Google it and see why I think it should take the prize as the worlds "oddest" looking insect) Now these little tackers dig tunnels in the lawn and then when they call the sound is amplified by the shape of the tunnel. Fascinating. We are due to hear Banjo frogs soon (I was telling Lisa about them just the other day) They're my favourite :-) Happy week to you. XX

  7. I never noticed that about the crickets and fire flies. I will be watching now. I read once that when the cicadas start, summer begins to end. That always made me sad.
