the heat is intense. the cats have looked like this all day. i took a quick trip over the border to the land of my birth this morning to pick up a roll of cotton quilting batting that i'd ordered. and the queen anne's lace waving in the fields and on the edge of the highway made me cry as i drove. it is one of many personal iconic summer-isms, but possibly the one i hold dearest. i will head to my parents in the next few days to get photos of the fields all white and dreamy. i am finding this summer the most beautiful i can remember. and sarah harmer's 'songs for clem' is the soundtrack to all the steamy beauty.

  1. Hello Annette:
Oh how well we remember the frothy 'Cow Parsley' as we called it along all the hedgerows in Herefordshire when we lived there. As you say, its simple beauty really does make one feel quite emotional, and it always stretched as far as the eye could see.

Our extremely hot days have now been replaced by much cooler weather but over the past few weeks we have rather resembled your cats!

  2. aaah, you gave me a smile as i head out to work, thinking of the two of you reposed like the cats. and i didn't know that my wedding flowers were also known as cow parsley (yes, it was my wedding bouquet....my mother worked hard to find it in september, but she did!)

  3. What a great picture! I have a distinct memory of when I was 4 or 5 years old, picking a bouquet of Queen Anne's Lace and having my mother tell me they were weeds. I was crushed. That's when I learned that parents don't know everything.

  6. Your cats are beautiful! I love how cats manage to be'themselves' so unapologetically, how they really relish just lying about. In my next life I want to be a kitty too! :-)
